1. Going To See Properties on Your Own

Moisture cannot evaporate in a home without good ventilation – this eventually leads to structural problems. Go to the attic and check whether it is well ventilated. Good ventilation also ensures that the roof stays in tip-top shape for a long time. If an attic is not properly ventilated, the sun’s heat is contained inside and moisture can’t evaporate. As a result, the home’s structural integrity is compromised.

4. Not Checking for Amateur Repairs

If the home seller has lived in their home for a long time, it's not rare to see amateur repairs done by them or another unskilled person. Most homeowners do such repairs to avoid spending money on professional services – not knowing they will come back to bite them one day. These amateur repairs, often electrical and plumbing ones, don’t adhere to building codes and may cause further damage later on.

5. Overlooking Environmental Hazards

In days gone by, there were fewer building restrictions and technology was limited. Because of this, some older homes contain asbestos, carbon monoxide, toxic molds, radon, and lead-based paint. If the home you’ve fallen in love with was built before 1978, chances are it may have lead-based paint. You can buy a test kit for lead paint at your local health department and swab the areas with flaking, zebra-like chips.
